As 2019 draws to a close, I thought I’d take a walk down memory lane and write about my favourite travel moments from the past decade. Here’s to the next decade of travel!
RESCUING TURTLES IN SRI LANKA
September 2015 was the start of my gap year and a really significant and transformative time in my life. I volunteered in a sea turtle rescue centre and looked after gorgeous little girls in a local orphanage. I don’t like to have favourites, but I would go back to Sri Lanka in a heartbeat.
BACKPACKING AROUND THAILAND, CAMBODIA & VIETNAM
The next stage of my gap year adventures was spent backpacking around Southeast Asia! Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam were beautiful and I only really touched the surface. Laos didn’t quite make the list but it didn’t help that we went in monsoon season. The culture and food in this part of the world make them such wonderful places to visit.
EXPLORING UBUD, BALI
The final leg of my gap year journey was a week in beautiful Bali. I can’t wait to go back and climb Mount Batur, go to a yoga class and maybe try surfing!

LEANING OVER A VOLCANO CRATER IN NICARAGUA
Back in 2014 my school expedition to Nicaragua and Honduras was waaaay out of my comfort zone and the most exciting adventure I’d ever been on. Camping near the top of Volcan Telica was insane!

DIVING IN ROATAN, HONDURAS
Gaining my PADI Open Water Diver qualification on the Honduran island of Roatan was incredible, and I can’t wait to dive more around the world!

MY SISTER’S WEDDING IN KOS
In May 2015 my sister got married on the Greek island of Kos. It was so dreamy! We spent a week celebrating, exploring the island by Jeep, visiting natural thermal pools by the beach, sipping cocktails and eating delicious Greek food!

MEETING FAMILY IN ROME
By far my favourite city in the world, Roma. This was made even more memorable as we watched my dad cycle up to the Colosseum, completing his 50th birthday / charity bike ride 2000km from home to Rome.

SUNSET OVER THE SAHARA, MOROCCO
My most recent adventure and my first taste of Africa! The highlight of Morocco was camping on the edge of the Sahara desert, an experience I’ll never forget.

SPANISH COAST BY TRAIN: BARCELONA, VALENCIA & ALCOSSEBRE
Summer 2018 was one of my favourites, as I travelled by train from Barcelona down to Alcossebre on the coast (where I stayed in my aunt’s flat) and then onto Valencia. It was 2 weeks of sunshine, sea and sangria.

WINTER BREAKS IN BUDAPEST, BERLIN & KRAKOW
These city breaks in 2016, 2017 and 2019 respectively were fantastic long weekends away in winter. I want European winter breaks to become a tradition in the future of my travels.
Wow, just look at all the amazing places you’ve been to! I hope you had a lovely festive season! Wishing you a very Happy New Year and lots of memorable adventures! Aiva
